One of the last Morgans my mother selected and enjoyed watching show, Shalimar made history as one of the youngest World Champion Mares in history when she was crowned in 1998 in Oklahoma City as a two year old. She went on to show just one more season in harness before she joined our breeding program, producing 15 foals over 12 years for six different breeders (with the help of embryo transfer).
First came the lovely filly Sarde’s Town Flirt (by Man About Town LPS), who was the highest selling weanling ever sold at auction and was purchased by Silver Creek Ranch in California. But it was her second foal, Joan Rose (by Mizrahi), named after my dear mother who lost her battle with cancer the year before this filly was born, who captured my heart. She had a brief show career in hand, but was Grand Champion Mare at New England as a yearling before traveling to Oklahoma City that fall to capture the Futurity Yearling Filly World Championship.
Shalimar’s next foal has probably done more to promote the modern versatility of the Morgan Horse than any other horse born in the last 50 years. Sarde’s Sinful (by HVK Courageous Flaire) earned his first World Champion tricolors as the 2003 Futurity 2YO Pleasure Driving Gelding Reserve World Champion, which was just a prelude to his nearly two decades of winning in everything from Park Saddle to English Pleasure to Equitation and Classic Pleasure, saddle and harness, all the while spending the off seasons out on the trails, winning gymkhana races, performing in parades, costume classes and learning high school tricks at home with his adoring owner, Miss Victoria Walz of Rancho Santa Fe, California. We couldn’t be more proud of a horse wearing our Sarde prefix!
Many time champions Winterset Rhyme Thyme GCH and Mendon Ladies Man were two other foals out of Shalimar that went on to enjoy long and illustrious show careers. The beautiful Stonecroft Trillium (by Stonecroft Trilogy) earned her roses at the Grand National in Jr Exhibitor Pleasure Driving. Her full sister, Stonecroft Tiara, has also won in performance and in hand. Sarde’s Gypsy Rose (by Mizrahi), a full sister to Joan Rose, was a winner in hand and pleasure driving before becoming a promising producer for us with three beautiful foals by Minion Millennium.
For Shalimar, every day is a horse show and we still enjoy watching her perform for us while she enjoys a much deserved retirement to the pastures of Sarde Morgans.
